God Hand
There are the universally praised masterpieces and the cult classics in the pantheon of PlayStation 2 classics. These are the games that were too bold, too different, or too hard for the mainstream to enjoy. God Hand stands proudly at the top of that last mountain. Clover Studio, the people behind Okami and Viewtiful Joe, made God Hand. It’s a third-person brawler that’s just as funny as it is hard. It gives points for skill and punishes button mashing very harshly. For years, this masterpiece was tethered to its original hardware, but now, thanks to the power of the ArmsX2 emulator, you can unleash the divine fists of justice right from your Android device.
“You’re Not a Man, You’re the God Hand!”
The story of God Hand is very simple and very silly. You play as Gene, a cocky but good-hearted martial artist who loses his arm while protecting a woman. He then becomes the wielder of the legendary “God Hand,” one of two divine arms that belong to a god who once defeated the powerful demon king Angra. Gene is now being hunted by an army of demons who want the God Hand for themselves because he has this amazing power.
What comes next is more of a slapstick action-comedy than a grand epic. Gene, with the sharp-tongued Olivia (the woman he saved), travels through a strange, western-inspired landscape, fighting off hordes of strange thugs, dominatrix-style demons, Power Ranger-like midgets, and a flamboyant, cigar-chomping demon named Elvis. The story doesn’t take itself seriously at all. It keeps breaking the fourth wall and telling jokes that will make you laugh out loud while you’re getting beaten up.
The Art of the Customizable Beatdown
The combat system in God Hand is what makes it so great. It might look like a simple brawler at first, but that’s not the case at all. You have never had this much control over Gene’s fighting style before. You can change Gene’s whole arsenal instead of being stuck with a set of moves. You can buy and collect hundreds of different moves, from simple jabs and roundhouse kicks to strange and funny ones like “Ball Buster” and “Yes Man Kablaam.” Then you connect these moves to the face buttons to make a combo string that is all your own.
You can’t just run in and hit buttons in this game. Enemies are smart; they will avoid your attacks, block them, and punish you harshly for your mistakes. You need to learn how to dodge attacks by using a special “dodge” button to weave and backflip around them. Your “Tension Gauge” fills up when you hit your opponent and avoid getting hit. Once activated, Gene uses the full power of the God Hand, making him temporarily invincible and able to move at lightning speed, which lets you deal a lot of damage.
You can also use the “God Roulette,” a wheel of very powerful and often funny special moves that use “Roulette Orbs.” Some of these attacks are divine punches that send enemies into the stratosphere, while others are strange moves like the “Grovel,” in which Gene literally begs for his life on the ground. This is a surprisingly effective (and humiliating) way to avoid some attacks.
The dynamic difficulty is probably the most well-known part. As you do well, a level indicator on the screen will go from Level 1 to Level 2, then Level 3, and finally “Level DIE.” Enemies get faster, more aggressive, and smarter with each level. The game pushes back against you all the time, making you get better all the time. This never-ending but fair challenge is what makes finally beating a tough boss one of the best things that can happen in a game.
